Another day, another new development.

In an effort to increase access to testing, the Biden Administration announced beginning Saturday, January 15th, home COVID-19 tests will be covered under private medical insurance. The Federal Government will also be distributing free home tests. Visit COVIDtests.gov for more information. Ordering begins January 19.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Tests can be purchased from pharmacies, retailers, and most online vendors.
  • Save your receipts and check with your carrier for detailed instructions on how to get reimbursed for your out-of-pocket test purchases.
  • Carriers will be required to reimburse members for up to 8 home tests kits per covered person per month.
  • Tests will not be subject to copays or deductibles.
  • No doctor’s order or prescription will be needed.
  • Tests purchased prior to January 15th will not be eligible for reimbursement.
  • Home tests have been in high demand, so be aware that there might be limits on how many tests can be purchased at once.
  • Individuals on Medicare can receive free testing with a doctor’s order.
  • Individuals on Medicaid or CHIP should check with their local agency to make see they qualify for free home tests as it varies by state.
  • Uninsured individuals do not qualify for this reimbursement program but will be able to request the free home tests from the Federal Government. Uninsured individuals can also visit free community testing centers or visit the HHS website for more information.
