Most people know that carriers provide discounts for being accident and violation free, but did you know that you may earn additional discounts for your safe driving habits with new driver monitoring apps? These programs are known in the insurance industry as telematics.
Telematic apps record simple statistics about your driving activity such as hard-braking, rapid acceleration, time of day and number of miles driven. The apps provide feedback on your performance to help improve your driving and your discounts. Once you complete the program, which typically runs 90 days, you will receive a score based on your results. Some carriers offer discounts up to 30% off your collision coverage for excellent driving! Unfortunately, there are some carriers that will surcharge for poor driving during the monitoring program, so ask your agent about the type of telematics program available through your carrier.
